FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I select a supervisor?
Supervisor selection is done via SMAP Online. It usually takes place at the beginning of the new semester. We will announce the date on this website. Please take note that only those who have registered for FYP I via SMAP Online will be able to select. Can I select the supervisor of my choice?
Yes, granted that he or she is on the selection list. Selection is on "first come first serve" basis. You will have to check to see if he or she has already acquired the maximum number of students. You are advised to have a few choices in mind before you make your selection. What should I do next once I have a supervisor confirmed for my project?
Meet with your supervisor to discuss about your project. By the end of Week 2, you will need to submit your Project Title and Synopsis, which includes the Objectives, Scope of Study and Expected Results via the Online System. Your Project Title and Synopsis will then be perused by the respective Head of Engineering Panel, whose role is to consider and approve your research. You are advised to start working on your Project Proposal as early as Week 1. How often do I need to have discussions with my supervisor?
Ideally, you should meet with your supervisor at least once a week. According to regulations, students must attend at least 80% of the total meeting hours per semester, which should be determined by the supervisor. Failure to fulfill this requirement will result in you not meeting conditions for passing FYP. Can I change my supervisor and/or title?
This is not encouraged. Nevertheless, if you have a valid reason for changing your supervisor and/or title, then you can. Applications for changing supervisor and/or title must be made in advance using appropriate forms. Must my seminar presentation be in English?
Yes, you must communicate in English for both your FYP 1 and FYP 2 Seminars. Your Powerpoint slides (FYP 1) and Poster (FYP 2) must also be in English. Must I also write my Project Proposal, Final Report and Technical Paper in English?
You are given the option of writing your Project Proposal, Final Report and Technical Paper in either Bahasa Malaysia or English. If you write your Project Proposal and Final Report in English, your Technical Paper must also be written in English. What must I present during my FYP 1 Seminar?
For the FYP 1 Seminar, you should give an oral presentation of your Project Proposal (aided by Powerpoint slides) to the Examination Panel. What are the consequences if I fail to submit my Project Proposal to Panel by Week 12?
Failure to submit within the specified time will result in you NOT being allowed to present at the FYP 1 Seminar. Ultimately, you will be given Grade E (Fail) for your FYP 1. What must I present during my FYP 2 Seminar?
For the FYP 2 Seminar, you must produce a Poster that effectively summarises your project. You will also have to give a short oral presentation (based on your Poster) to the Examination Panel. All of these must be done in English. What are the consequences if I fail to submit my Draft Final Report to Panel by Week 12?
